Election 2011

Dear Colleague,
The Executive Council of the TEEU have requested me to bring to your attention that the Labour Party manifesto published on Friday contains the following explicit commitment relating to collective bargaining:

'Labour will introduce legislation to strengthen the rights of workers to engage in collective bargaining, as enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The legislation will also make it illegal to discriminate in any way against an employee because they are a member of a trade union or involved in trade union activity'.

State Companies & the threat of privatisation: What do the Party Manifestos Say?

If this can be secured it will be the first time in the history of the Irish State that workers would be entitled, as a right, to be represented by a trade Union.

Please vote in the upcoming election and encourage your family and friends to do likewise.

A document setting out the position of the 5 main parties on the privatisation of State Companies is available on this link for your attention and the attention of other members in your workplace. »

Yours fraternally

Eamon Devoy
General Secretary

2011 - A Year of Choice.

Eamon Devoy "Dear Colleagues,
We are facing into another difficult year but, for the first time since 2007, we will have an opportunity in the forthcoming election to decide which direction we wish to take as a society in the present crisis. It is amazing how many of the cheerleaders for the property bubble and the spendthrift policies of the Government that led to it are still out there telling us what to think.

Needless to say, their patter continues to include union bashing. Like the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, they tell us 'We all partied' and recovery is on the way. Hopefully it is, but nobody seriously believes there can be a recovery under the same Government that created the mess in the first place.

We may not all have partied but we do all have a responsibility to use our votes intelligently and responsibly in the coming election. The TEEU will be looking hard at the policies of all the parties.

I would ask you all to assess those policies with a view not alone to how they will affect your pay packet but how they will contribute to making Ireland a better place to live for all of us. Remember, since 1997, we have had a series of governments that were elected on promises of slashing taxes; but they didn't tell us most of that relief would go to multi-millionaires while PAYE workers being taken out of the top rate of income tax would find they were going to be paying stealth taxes for essential services and buying ever increasing health insurance to jump the queue in our overstretched health services.

Key issues for the TEEU include:

  • Union recognition, because only strong organisation can ensure workers can face the employers' offensive in the coming year

  • An end to tax shelters for the rich

  • A higher rate of tax for the wealthy

  • A viable jobs stimulus package, especially for our young people - including an ambitious programme to roll out apprenticeships and other workplace training programmes to boost productivity and employment

  • Protection of our public services
Use your vote wisely and support political parties that support our objectives."
